What is the difference between an APP and a MOBILE SITE?

An App is a specific application or program that is meant to run on a “smart phone” platform, such as the apple iPhone, Droid or other smart phones. It is, in essence, a “program” with certain functions that go beyond that of a normal web site.

A Mobile Site on the other hand, is viewable on all smart phones, or phones that have browser capabilities and can communicate with the internet. It is important to note that Mobile Sites will be also found by search engines and are accessible to most of the online community, while an App will not appear in searches. It must first be downloaded and opened up to function.

Does my business need an App or a Mobile Site?

This is a question most businesses need to ask before investing in either platform. the most important aspect to consider is that Apps will not help you with Google Search and will not show up in the local maps.

On the other hand, Mobile Sites, while one can add much of the functionality of a native app, still lag behind in some of the more viral, community building functionalities of an App.

Example: One of the main features of an app is “Push Technology”. Using this function, a business is no longer dependent or reliant upon email, OR those more expensive SMS marketing programs. Instead, one can simply “push” a message to all those loyal customers who have downloaded and installed the businesses’ App. Creating your own Groupon-like specials could not be easier!

Best Practices

Whether you decide to invest in an App or a Mobile Site to build your business and capture the attention of the thousands of customers now using mobile to access info about businesses like yours, one thing is for sure – NOW is the time to move your business forward.

Early adopters, just like those who first started using web sites and video early on, captured the larger part or their market. That’s called being first-in-line and creating “legacy” positioning online. But you also need to know what people want to see in a mobile-based site or mobile app so here are a few tips:

Keep it Quick
Mobile users are often short on time, squeezing in online tasks as they go about their day. To help them, design your site to
load fast and make copy easy to scan.

Simplify Navigation
No one likes to be confused. Clear navigation and, on large or complex sites, search functionality will help your customers easily find what they need.

Be Thumb-Friendly
People use their fingers to operate mobile devices—especially their thumbs. Design your site so even large hands can easily interact with it.

Design for Visibility
A mobile-friendly site gets its message across without causing eyestrain. Make it easy for your customers to read—remember, they may be in a place with low light.

Make it Accessible
Ideally, your mobile site should work across all mobile devices and all handset orientations. Find alternatives to Flash—it does not work on some devices.

Make it Easy to Convert
No matter what your site’s objective is, your customers need to be able to do it with a virtual keyboard and no mouse. Make it easy to buy
something or contact you.

Make it Local
Consumers look for local info on their phones all the time—from locating the nearest gas station to finding an open pizza place. Include functionality that helps people find and get to you.

Make it Seamless
People now use multiple screens throughout the day. Convert as much of the functionality of your desktop site to mobile as you can to create a seamless experience.

Use Mobile Site Redirects
A mobile site redirect is code that can automatically tell if visitors are using a mobile device and send them to the mobile-friendly version of your site. Have your site developer implement this redirect code so your customers get the best version of your site for their needs.

Listen, Learn and Iterate
Good mobile sites are user-centric, which means they’re built with input from your audience. Ask your desktop site users what they want in a mobile website and make testing and optimization an ongoing process.

Marketing Examples

Let’s take a biz owner named Jim who owns Clyde’s Tavern in PoDunk, Washington.

He’s having a slow day, and he decides to run a great lunch special to spark business.

He sends a mass text message to all the people on his mobile customer list just as they’re deciding where to go for lunch and voila…

It’s a happy day at Clyde’s.

Now, think about it: What business wouldn’t want to be able to fix a “slow day” with the push of a button?

First, when considering an investment in a mobile site or mobile app, you should not be focused on just the cost. More importantly are the Marketing Strategy you can employ.
